The People's Soviet Republic of Turkmenistan

In 1991, the collapse of the Soviet Union led to the ultimate independence of Turkmenistan, which had been known as the Turkmen Soviet Socialist Republic since May of 1925. When the Republic of Turkmenistan was formed, it lasted only 3 years until President Saparmurat Niyazov "Türkmenbaşy" declared the then disbanded Communist Party of Turkmenistan, as the sole legal party and dissolved the Democratic Party of Turkmenistan. The green flag was replaced by one based off its design, and the design of the Turkmen SSR's flag. The 5 rugs, the color green and the 5 stars and the crescent moon came from the Republic flag, and the red field, blue stripes and the yellow hammer, sickle and star came from the Soviet flag. The Soviet anthem was kept, and Niyazov remained on friendly terms with Russia. The olive branches were a symbol of Turkmenistan's permanent neutrality.
